Weekend outdoor expo features exhibits, dinners, college night

John Burke is hoping for a weekend of sunshine.

From Friday through Sunday, he and the other members of Southcrest Baptist Church, 3801 S. Loop 289, will host the West Texas Family Outdoor Expo, a three-day smorgasbord of outdoors sports exhibits, children's activities and, Burke hopes, male bonding.

"I'm really excited about getting men together," said Burke, the church's associate pastor of media. "That Beast Feast - that's going to be a great time."

Part of the Expo, the Beast Feast, is a ticketed steak dinner catered by Cagle Steaks. It will be for men and boys only at the Town and Country Airport at 6 p.m. Saturday.

"That's real important, I think," Burke said. "I haven't seen a whole lot done for just men in Lubbock, and that's just for men and boys."

On Friday night, women will have their turn at fellowship when Edwina Patterson, founder of Redeeming the Time Ministry, speaks at a Ladies of the Plains banquet at 6 p.m.

Sunday night, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., is Student Night, which will feature free pizza, a "Rock Band 2" video game competition, performances from Christian illusionist Jared Hall, music from Christian recording artist Lindsey Kane and a message from Jay Lowder of Harvest Ministries.

But the whole family will be able to enjoy the meat of the weekend, which will be served from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and will include free RV, boat, motorcycle and jet-ski displays, game calling clinics, roping exhibits, dog obedience demonstrations, a whitetail deer display, and children's events, such as a petting zoo, climbing wall and laser shot.
